Why Most Athletes Never Train Horizontal Force Production

Ask most athletes how they train for speed and they will tell you about squats, box jumps, and leg press. Vertical movements. Up and down. Those build power, but sprinting is not a vertical movement. Sprinting is horizontal. You are trying to move forward, not up.


Horizontal force production is how much force you can apply into the ground behind you. It is the single biggest physical predictor of sprint speed. And almost nobody trains it directly.


The Vertical Bias Problem

The gym rewards vertical movements. Squats go up and down. Jumps go up and down. They are easy to load, easy to measure, easy to program. Athletes get strong in those patterns and assume that translates to sprint speed.


It does, partially. Vertical strength has some transfer. There is a ceiling on that transfer, and most athletes hit it without realizing it. They keep squatting heavier and wonder why their forty time is not moving.


What Horizontal Force Production Training Looks Like

Sled pushes and pulls are the most direct way to train it. You are pushing forward against resistance at a sprint angle. Hip extension under load in the exact position that acceleration demands. The transfer is direct.


Broad jumps, horizontal bounding, and resisted sprint work all address this too. The common thread is that the force is going backward and into the ground, not straight down.


Why It Gets Ignored

Sleds take space and setup. Horizontal bounding looks less impressive than a big squat. It does not fit neatly into a standard gym setup. So coaches skip it or treat it as an accessory rather than a priority.


At Güd we treat sled work as a core part of speed development, not a finisher. If you want to actually move faster, you need to train the direction you are trying to move.


The Fix

Add horizontal work before your vertical work if speed is the goal. Sled push, broad jump, or resisted sprint, then squats. You will feel the difference in your first steps on the field.
